1. Affiliate marketing is an Internet-based method of marketing that…

a) uses one website to drive web traffic to another website
b) is based on revenue sharing
c) both a and b

Answer is C – In affiliate marketing, a business offers compensation to affiliates for each lead or customer that comes as a result of the affiliate’s marketing efforts.

Affiliate marketing includes search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, and display advertising. In order to be compensated, the majority of affiliate programs use revenue sharing or cost per sale (CPS). Other affiliate programs use cost per action (CPA) or cost-per-click (CPC).

2. The affiliate marketing industry has four key players:

a) the merchant, the network, blogs, and web banners
b) the merchant, the network, the affiliate, and the customer
c) the retailer, the publisher, search engines, and text advertisements

Answer is B – The merchant is the retailer or brand. The network acts as a liaison between the affiliate and the merchant. The affiliate is the publisher. And lastly, the customer is the person who experiences the marketing.

3. In order to be a successful affiliate marketer, you will need the following:

a) your own website and a newsletter
b) an e-book and your own product to promote
c) multiple e-mail addresses and your own product to promote

Answer is A – In order to be a top-selling affiliate marketer, you will need to have both your own website and a newsletter. The website is your affiliate marketing ground and it will also help you collect e-mails addresses (build a client list). Once you have a list, you can stay fresh in your customers’ minds,  earn their trust and bring them back to your affiliate offers.

4. True or false: You don’t need a product of your own to promote as an affiliate marketer.

True – It is not necessary for an affiliate marketer to have their own product. An affiliate marketer is free to promote virtually anyone’s product.

5. True or false: As an affiliate marketer, you are in charge of handling product shipping, support, and refunds.

False – Product shipping, support, and refunds are never affiliate marketer’s responsibility. The merchant takes care of it all.

Now that you know a little bit more about what affiliate marketing is and how it works, you can use this effective money-making model to grow your business.

How To Add An Amazon Affiliate Link On WordPress

Earlier today, I was talking to a friend about how to add an amazon affiliate link on wordpress, and I thought others may have the same question.

I am sure there is more than one way to do this, but here is how I do it: it works great and it’s easy to implement if you want to make money with amazon affiliate links.

How To Add An Amazon Affiliate Link On WordPress

How to add an Amazon affiliate link on wordpress

Let’s say I want to link to a Wireless USB Plantronics Headset, since a lot of us, internet marketers need a headset.

Here are the steps I usually go through:

1. Find the item I want to add to my page on on Amazon

2. Click on the HTML tab here in my WordPress, so I can add the code (if you add it into the visual tab you’ll end up with code on your page, instead of a picture or a link).

text tab

3. If I want my picture to be surrounded by text, I’ll add this code: <div style=”float:left;margin:15px;”></div>. It will give me the option to align the picture left or right, whichever fits my page better, and also gives me some white space around the image, so that the text doesn’t go up against my picture.

4. Then, I’ll go to Amazon and get my code. If you are logged into your account, you’ll have a stripe at the top of your page, and here you can choose what type of link you want to add to your wordpress site.

How to easily add Amaozn tect links to your website

Make sure you choose the tracking ID specific to the project you are working on, so you can track where your sales are coming from. You can create tracking IDs specific to a site, or even specific to a page. Don’t use the same ID on all your sites: you’ll never know what’s working and what’s not.

5. After you choose your specific tracking ID, you can choose what type of link you want. Here’s what you’ll see, depending on which typo of link you want.

If you want to use a text link, you’ll see this: I always choose the short link to keep things tidy.

If using a combination of text and image, it will look like this:

text and image link to amazon

And if you choose an image link, it will give you the option to choose the size of your image. It will look like this:

image link to amazon

6. Now go back to your site, click in between the <div> brackets, and paste the code there: you now have your link to amazon.

A better option!

Do you have any questions? Feel free to ask them below.

This is how I’ve been adding links to my wordpress sites for many years, but a few months ago, I came across a service that helps me create my image links a lot easier and more attractive! It’s called easy product displays, and works not only with Amazon, but also with Share a sale merchants and Zazzle. You can also create beautiful displays for other merchants by entering just a bit of information. This way, all your images are uniform on your site.

Here’s how a link to the above headset looks like:

This is the largest size possible, but you can also create smaller images that you align to one side or the other, or you can create product showcases, like this:

Interview With Michelle Of Making Sense Of Cents

Michelle of Making Sense of Cents and her hubby RV full time, and she makes more money in a month than others make in an entire year. Want to know how she does it? Come on over and read my interview with her, where she shares a bit from her journey. A few months ago, one of the FB groups I belong to had a discussion about what’s possible with blogging. That’s when I “met” Michelle, the blogger at Making Sense Of Cents. She said she was making somewhere around $50K with her blog (by now, she doubled that! HEr last income report shows she made $102,911 WOW!!!), and was planning to create a course to outline her methods.

WOW! I heard about people making a living online with blogging (I made some good money over the years myself), but Michelle was making more in a month than others made in an entire year. Today I’m sharing with you an interview with Michelle: a bit of the behind the scenes of a six figure blogger 🙂

Can you please share a bit about yourself and Making Sense of Cents?

Hello! My name is Michelle Schroeder-Gardner and I run the blog Making Sense of Cents.

I graduated from college in 2010, and again in 2012 with my Masters with an emphasis in Finance. I started out as a financial analyst, and worked in that position for 3 years.

5 years ago, I started my personal finance blog with the hopes of teaching people how to save money as well as keep track of my financial progress after reading about a personal finance website in one of their articles. Due to that website, I became extremely interested in personal finance blogs, and my interest in blogging just grew from there. Before August of 2011, I didn’t even know that blogs existed. I didn’t know what they were, I didn’t know that they could make money, or anything like that.

I did not create my blog with the intention of making money blogging. It was really all just a hobby. But, I realized that I really loved blogging (of course, I still love it!), and I eventually left my financial analyst job so that I could blog full time.

On my blog, I write a lot about the many ways to make extra income, money saving tips, living your dream life, RVing (me and my husband RV full-time), and more. I love managing my blog, Making Sense of Cents, and I am very grateful that this is now my full-time career, my business, and pretty much my life.

Want to do what Michelle does? Check out her Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing, where she details step by step how she makes money.

How do you decide what to write about?

I usually write about topics that I come across. This may be problems that I’m dealing with, problems that people I know are dealing with, reader questions, and more. I have a LONG list of over 100 blog topic ideas currently in my note pad.

Do you do keyword research before you start each blog post? What tools do you use?

I actually currently don’t do any keyword research. Everything is very organic.

Do you SEO your posts? How?

No, see above 🙂

What steps do you take after writing a post? How do you give it visibility?

I’m not the greatest at promoting my blog posts, but it is something that I am working on. Currently, I just promote my blog posts through social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest, as well as informing my email subscribers about new blog posts on Making Sense of Cents as well.

How much traffic does it take to make money blogging?

It doesn’t take a ton of traffic to make money blogging. This is a huge myth about blogging! I receive around 400,000 monthly page views and I’m earning around $100,000 a month. It’s all about running and managing your blog correctly, as there are TONS of ways to make money blogging. You just need to find what works for your blog and your readers.

Do you believe content needs to be thousands of words long? Or do you think shorter content makes sense too?

I think this just varies depending on the blogger as well as the niche. For myself, I like to write longer posts. Plus, I’m in the personal finance niche which means that longer posts are pretty much required, as it would be difficult to explain any personal finance topic in just a paragraph or two.

Due to that, most of my blog posts are around 1,500 to 2,000 words each.

How do you balance work and life? Since you’re making good money, don’t you feel like you should be working all the time?

As a blogger, it is SO easy to work all the time. I used to be completely horrible at managing a good work-life balance. It’s something I still struggle with, but I am much better with it.

The main thing I do in order to keep my sanity is that I like to work ahead as much as I can. I’m currently around 1.5 to 2 months ahead when it comes to work, and this makes it easier for me to take a break from the blog every now and then.

What would you tell someone who’s been working online for a long time and still doesn’t make significant money?

My top would be to either take a high quality blogging or blog monetization course, such as Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing, finding a blog coaching, joining a blogging mastermind, and so on. Doing one or all of these things will help you to see where you may be doing something incorrectly or what you may need to work on.

Want to start right away? Try the Affiliate Marketing Masterclass!

As with any method of making money online, there are cons and pros.  In my opinion the pros outweigh the cons in affiliate marketing.  Here are some pros as to why you should be including affiliate marketing in your online business.

Why Should You Learn Affiliate Marketing Online

  • Low or no start up costs. All you really need to begin affiliate marketing is a website.  You don’t necessarily have to set up a new website. You can use relevant affiliate programs to optimize your income from websites you already have.  Affiliate marketing is easy to incorporate in an existing website or blog.
  • No need to become an expert copywriter.  Many of the tools you need will be provided for you. Most affiliate programs provide you with tools to promote their products with, such as banner ads, text ads, emails promos, articles, sales copy, and blog posts.
  • Low overhead. By promoting someone else’s product, rather than creating your own, you have no inventory to look after, no orders to process and no customer service to provide.
  • Passive income. This is my favorite part.  This means you stop trading hours for dollars. You can review a product once, place the review on your website and that review can potentially make you money over and over again. This is passive income and affiliate marketing is one of the best businesses to get into for anyone who likes the idea of passive income.

Affiliate Marketing Benefits

Affiliate marketing offers many benefits and one of the best parts is that you can fit it into just about any niche.  If your passion is country music for example, you can create an affiliate website about country singers in the Grand Ole Opry. You can then earn money promoting products from those country singers. There’s something very appealing about making money doing something you’re passionate about.
